Winter (land) Survival Training For Aircrew

AIM

This program is designed to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to:

  • React to a forced landing (land-based) emergency
  • Care for themselves in a winter survival situation
  • Utilize available survival equipment
  • Participate to the maximum extent in their rescue.

CONTENT

Classroom Theory:

  • Psychology of Survival
  • Mechanisms of Heat Loss and Heat Gain
  • Overview of Helicopter Survival Pack and Liferaft
  • How to Build a Lean-To and is a Liferaft a Viable shelter on Land
  • Personal Survival Kit
  • Electronic Signal Devices, Signal Fires and Flares
  • Forced landing scenario brief

Practical/Field Work:

  • Transport to Field training Site (if required)
  • Shelter Building
  • Signals, Signal Techniques
  • Fire Building
  • Break Camp
  • Return transport to SSTL (if required)
  • Debrief

DURATION: One (1) day

PREREQUISITES

  • Trainees are expected to be in a good state of health and physically capable of fully taking part in all program activities.  Trainees are expected to participate in all physical training requirements.
  • A valid Medical Certificate is required to be submitted prior to start of course.  See “General Information: Medical Fitness” for full details.
  • A valid Government Identification is required and must be presented for registration and to the instructor on the first day of course commencement.  (Driver’s License, Passport, Vantage card)

CERTIFICATION

All persons who successfully complete the course based on the performance standards will receive:

  • A Survival Systems Training certificate for Winter Land Survival Training (valid for 3 years)
