AIM
The aim of the course is to provide those who are assigned to crew a ship’s lifeboat or rescue boat, other than a fast rescue boat, with the knowledge and skills to safely and efficiently carry out those duties.
This certification is required for all navigation and engine room rating qualifications and for most certificates of competency as well as Fishing Master 1 and 2 class certificates.
The course meets the Standards of Training Certification and Watch keeping (STCW 95), Table A-VI(2-1) and is approved by Transport Canada. This course replaces the Marine Emergency Duties (MED) B1 course for deep sea vessels.
CONTENT
This program will include:
- Emergency equipment
- Operating emergency equipment safely
- Abandonment procedures
- Rescue procedures
Areas of study will include the following:
- Provide leadership and knowledge during the survival phase following an abandonment
- Provide leadership and knowledge to coordinate the rescue of survivors to a safe place
- Understand the operation and safety procedures for operating an enclosed lifeboat’s on load / no load release hook system
Practical training exercises will be conducted in water. These exercises will include:
- Operate in a safe and effective manner an enclosed lifeboat on open water
- Approach and recover a crew over board into the enclosed lifeboat safely and effectively, acting as coxswain and as deckman
- Take a liferaft or lifeboat in tow safely and effectively with an enclosed lifeboat, acting as coxswain and as deckman
- Operate the enclosed lifeboat in various sea and swell conditions
- Steer compass courses as directed to move the enclosed lifeboat clear of danger in reduced visibility
- Conduct voice communications over the VHF radio as appropriate for an abandonment situation
- Launch and recover an enclosed lifeboat under gravity davits safely and efficiently using a releasing painter
- Pace with an FRB in order to transfer castaways safely and efficiently for transfer to a safe place
- Participate in a simulated abandonment into the ocean wearing an immersion suit, launch, inflate and board a liferaft and be rescued by an FRB
DURATION
Minimum of 28 hours of instruction delivered over four (4) days.
PREREQUISITES
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Trainees are expected to be in a good state of health and physically capable of fully taking part in all program activities. Trainees are expected to participate in all physical training requirements.
- A statement of health form completed on the first day of the course. A valid Medical Certificate, preferably the Mariners Medical, is required to be submitted prior to start of course. See “General Information: Medical Fitness” for full details.
- A valid Government Identification is required and must be presented for registration and to the instructor on the first day of course commencement. (Driver’s License, Passport, Vantage card)
- A Candidate Document Number (CDN) is required in order to obtain a Department of Transport certificate. Applicants without a CDN must fill out an “Application for a Candidate Document Number (CDN)”, which can be found on Transport Canada’s website. The completed application, together with two (2) documents as proof of identity, must be submitted in person to the closest Transport Canada office.
WITHOUT EXCEPTION, those trainees in non-compliance will be refused and billed the full program fee.
CERTIFICATION
All persons who successfully complete the course based on the performance standards will receive:
- A Transport Canada EXN 24 certificate of completion for Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats, other than Fast Rescue Boats, meeting STCW 95 Regulation VI/2.
